Paperboy: Preparing youngins for their future in the workplace. The object of the game was to deliver papers to the correct houses while dodging a wide variety of obstacles. You had to watch out for dogs chasing you, skateboarders, break dancers, cars, lawnmowers, motorcycles, random tires rolling down the street, a guy with a jackhammer, tornados, a knife wielding housewife, death (unrelated to the housewife), and much more. Geez, I thought that postal workers had it tough.
You start your job bright and early on Monday and deliver papers throughout the week. If you miss a house or break their window with a bad shot, they would unsubscribe. If you make it to the next day, you could attempt to redeliver a paper and get their business back…like any good paperboy would. Once you completed your route for the day, there is a training course you can take your bike through to test out your mad skillz. Yes, you can take it off some sweet jumps (lucky!). Because just like reality, there is a paperboy training course at the end of every suburban street in America.
The graphics in the game weren’t that great. They just barely did the job so you could see where you were going. The sound wasn’t the New York Philharmonic Orchestra by any stretch of the imagination. But it did have slightly more beeps and bops than Pong. The true meat of this game is its game play. Paperboy stays true to its arcade roots in its level of difficulty. Nothing says arcade goodness like pumping quarters in a machine trying to beat an impossible game.
I’ve always enjoyed this game and it seems to be a diehard classic with the fans. I can still remember the Christmas when Santa Claus left me this game (and Super Mario Bros 3). As a matter of fact, I finally found a copy for my NES just a few months ago. So if you are looking for a challenging game, you need to get a copy of this. Now.
Calling it quits for this week,
Joshua

i assume it’s safe to say that after reading your review of paperboy we can expect to see a rising number of new papermen in america. i say this because most every guy in america knows how to ride a bike and are probably experts at escaping women wielding knives. (i guess that “most” doesn’t include you, mr. babbitt.) thank you joshua starling for redirecting my life’s purpose.
