That Was Close

Ahoy!

This happened about two weeks ago but I haven’t had a chance to post it, so here goes:

Kari picked me up from work around 4:30 and we got onto I-10 to go home. Just as a reminder, I-10 is currently undergoing some major construction. Depending on where you are between the Thomasville RD and Monroe ST exits, there are concrete barriers on the sides of the road, especially left hand side. Keep this in mind because we are driving in the left lane.
We top a hill not far from the Monroe exit when Kari notices that most of the cars ahead of us are slowing down. Lots and lots of brake lights. Kari applies the breaks and we start to slow down. A few seconds later, we realize that the cars in front of us aren’t slowing down…they are stopped.

Kari slams on the brakes and it looks like we’re going to stop. However…the guy behind us in the Chevy Silverado isn’t going to. In other words we’re about to get rear ended again. Both Kari and the guy in the truck realize what’s going on. He slams his truck into the concrete barrier on the left to try and slow down. Somehow…and I don’t know how exactly, the semi next to us in the right lane got over just enough for Kari to bring part of our car into that lane.

At about the same time this lady slams into the back of the Silverado (the State Trooper later estimated her going around 60 mph). I look over to the left just in time to see the truck, up against the barrier, go flying past us and hit the car that was in front of us.

I look over at Kari and say, “Did we get hit at all?” Because I thought the truck might have scrapped us as it went by. By the time we pulled off the road, whatever had stopped traffic was long gone. I’m guessing it was a dump truck turning off the interstate. Anyways, we didn’t hit at all and the lady who hit the truck totaled her car. As for the truck, it turns out he was actually driving up the side of the barrier. In fact, you can still the tire marks on the wall. But we did stick around to make sure everyone was ok and to give our witness statements.
So we were as close as you can be in an accident without getting in an accident.

And yes, I went home and had a beer…after sitting on the side of the interstate for an hour and a half…watching all the rubberneckers drive by.

If the traffic light’s about to go red, sometimes it’s smart to just keep going.

Dude, you need to update your website.
If somebody knew that you were getting married, but didn’t make it to the ceremony, they might get the wrong idea when they visit the page and the title of the top entry is “That Was Close.”
