Network Traffic – By The Numbers

Last week I did writeup on the wonders of OpenDNS. In that writeup, I mentioned how OpenDNS keeps stats on which IP Addresses are requested and how often. I decided to check out the traffic two nights ago since I was playing a few online rounds of Halo 3. And the results?
One connection to a Xbox Live server and that was it. I guess that once you are on, you’re on.
The Wii on the other hand was a completely different story. Just for the record, I didn’t play the Wii at all when these stats were taken. The Wii, as usual, had been in standby mode ever since I played it on Monday. The following stats cover a 24 hour period:
| Address | Requests | Purpose |
| rcw.wc24.wii.com | 473 | Mail/Messages |
| weather.wapp.wii.com | 254 | Weather Channel |
| news.wapp.wii.com | 126 | News Channel |
| cfh.wapp.wii.com | 75 | ??? |
| vt.wapp.wii.com | 19 | ??? |
| mtw.wc24.wii.com | 6 | ??? |
That’s quite a few requests over the course of 24 for not even using the system. I’m guessing one of those unknown addresses is for the Everybody Votes channel. As for the other two, maybe the Wii is checking for System Updates and Mii Parade changes. I tried looking on the internet, but I wasn’t able to find out anymore information. But it is apparent that the Nintendo Wii has its way with the internet when WiiConnect24 is turned on and the Wii is in standby mode.
I also noticed that my computer hits the Microsoft Update server and McAfee Anti-Virus definition server about 5 times (each) a day as well.
So in summary…that’s really it. I just wanted to pass on and give you a heads up at how often the Wii connects to the internet for data.
